Story

Mario La Via

Mario La Via was born and raised in Rome, Italy and developed a passion for yachting early in life. He spent the early part of his career in home construction before collaborating with a team of naval architects to build his first yacht in 1969 – the 18m Cohete in Anzio. Still in his mid 20s, Mario then constructed the 48m Eco Blanca in 1970 and another, a 51-meter, in 1976.

Mario’s team built one of the world’s most notable – and largest – yachts, the 87m Nabila. Launched in 1980 and now named Kingdom 5KR, this yacht was once owned by Donald Trump and remains one of the 100 largest yachts in the world. By 1979 Mario was already thinking bigger and constructed the general arrangement plan, of a 145 meter yacht, a length unheard of at the time. To this date Mario has been involved in the construction of over seven 100 + meter yachts.

For over 40 years, Mario has cultivated a reputation as a “giga yacht specialist” and has worked on the design and execution of more large yachts than anyone else in the world. His vision for the Privilege Yard, dedicated to building yachts over 100 meters, was ahead of its time even in 2008, but is now one of the world’s only – and newest - shipyards fully dedicated to the design, construction and outfitting of large, private luxury yachts up to 210 meters.

The Yard

State-of-the-art facility, state-of-the-art processes, state-of-the-art luxury yachts.

The Privilege Yachts shipyard encompasses 12 hectares of land granted by the Port of Civitavecchia, Italy. Completed in 2008, this state-of-the-art facility has been designed and purpose-built to facilitate the complete design, build and outfitting of large, steel, ultra-luxury yachts and has the capacity to build up to 3 vessels up to 210 meters in length at one time.

Certified GSE 2010, the yard incorporates all-solar flat roofs with photovoltaic panels that generate up to 1.3 Mega Watts worth of electrical power; more than double the amount the yard consumes.

The Privilege Yachts yard comprises the following departments and buildings dedicated to the various aspects of yacht building:

  • 10,000 square meters dedicated to steel block construction and modification
  • 2,000 square meters dedicated to finishings and interior fabrication
  • 10,000 square meter joiner shop and glass, marble and interior décor facility 2,000 square meters dedicated to shipyard services, storage and technical areas
  • 2,000 square meters of office and space

Projects

Through advanced engineering and construction techniques, the Privilege Yachts yard has the capacity to produce an 85m yacht in as little as 20 months, a 130m yacht in as little as 30 months, and a 210m yacht in as little as 36 months.

Privilege utilizes an assembly system of block construction and can produce up to 90 steel sections in less than one year. Thus, the hull and superstructure of a 210m yacht can be completed in just 12 months, with the systems installation, piping, fairing, paint and interior fit out being completed in the remaining 24 months.

Privilege concentrates in maximizing the usable interior space in their yachts. The average yacht of the same size has between two to three times less usable space.

Privilege dedicates itself in using the latest technology and choosing the finest materials for construction.

Because of the organized and advanced Privilege structure, we don’t have to sacrifice quality for time.
